Why must a roof have ventilation

House diagram showing roofing ventilation systemsVentilation is important for a multitude of reasons, especially if you have an attic or two story home. Proper ventilation in your roof will help keep your attic cooler in the hot summer months, which may prove important if you store valuable antiques, paperwork or holiday decorations there. If your attic becomes too hot, it can actually add damage to your roof and siding.

When your roof has good ventilation, it helps move about the moist air in the home, also protecting your home from unnecessary damage due to hot or cold weather. If you have a two story home, you probably notice that the upstairs is usually hotter than the downstairs. This is usually due to a decrease in air flow as heat rises within your home. Having a ventilated roof helps to combat this issue, creating a fresher air content in the bedrooms and areas that are upstairs. In addition, better air flow and ventilation helps you to save money on your energy bills each and every month, which really add up over the course of a year!
